Parklet Kickoff Party, Ping Pong Tournament and BBQ

The City of Lacombe is throwing a party, and you’re invited!

The City of Lacombe will celebrate the launch of the downtown parklet project on Saturday, June 14 from 11:00am to 3:00pm at the 50th Street location. Youth Unlimited will be hosting a BBQ with burgers and pop - all proceeds going to the YU-Turn Youth Centre. The City will be handing out freezies.

Not hungry? Stop by anyway, and check out the recently installed parklet. From 1 to 3 there will be the 1st Annual City of Lacombe Ping Pong Tournament and registration is open to everyone 14+. Prizes will be handed out to the winner but space is limited so register early.

Mayor of Lacombe, Steve Christie will be facing off against Jake Schellenburg of Youth Unlimited in a friendly game of ping pong as part of the event.

City Planning Intern Josh de Jong expressed his excitement about the event: “ the parklets are a great for the downtown and this event will help celebrate them. We’ve already observed lots of people using the ping pong table and the tournament is the perfect way to celebrate the parklets” .

The ping pong table is completely free to use until it is removed in the fall and ping pong paddles and balls are available at the parklet. “We wanted to make sure access to the ping pong table was as barrier free as possible” said de Jong. “People should be able to get out and have fun enjoying the table without having to bring their own paddle” de Jong continued. “Part of creating a great public space is making sure there are things for people to do”.

Two parklets or temporary public spaces have been installed in Downtown Lacombe in support of the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan and will hopefully encourage people to get out and enjoy Lacombe’s Downtown.

The YU-Turn Youth Centre will also be having an open house during the event. People will be able to tour the facility and learn about some of their summer programs.

If you would like to register for the Ping Pong Tournament or have any questions about the BBQ or Parklets, email Josh de Jong, Planning Intern at jdejong@lacombe.ca or you can reach him by phone at 403-782-1264.
